Shades of Escher
Shades of Escher was created as a tribute to the artist M.C. Escher whom I have been a fan of since high school. M. C. Escher employed optical illusions and geometric tilings to create his mind-bending art. His ingenious misrepresentations of reality both impacted and inspired my own sense of aesthetics. The techniques I used to create my tribute to Escher employed the science of optics and took advantage of both reflection and Snell's Law, which describes the refraction of light.
While I very rarely enter my art into contests, I did enter Shades of Escher in the SMART (Science and Math-based Art) 2012 Art for Science Sake contest which was a part of the Los Alamos Next Big Idea festival. The SMART contest received over 700 entries and I was very proud to have received the contest's Honorable Mention for Representation of Scientific/Mathematical Principle or Phenomena award.
