Microscopic Metropolis
Have you ever viewed a photo of a city taken from Earth orbit? Have you ever looked at the veins of a leaf under a microscope. The similarity of structure at these vastly different scales calls to mind the underlying feature of fractals: self-similarity at different scales. It was the common features of a city as seen from orbit and of a plant as seen under the microscope that was the inspiration for Microscopic Metropolis. On one scale we are magnificently large yet on another scale we are magnificently inconsequential.
